The Great Don Onitaijin

The Great Don Onitaijin

March 28, 2024

Power Rangers is a series that has formed the childhoods of many of us. This show was of the things that made up the early 2000s, being on the same level as Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh. However, while these two managed to stay on track, Power Rangers would end up going in a different direction. At a certain point the quality of the show started to decline and along with it, the quality of their toys. Any avid toy collector for the franchise will tell you that after RPM the toys took a severe nosedive in quality. It was as if the company behind them stopped caring about giving good toys and instead just wanted to get something out there. And with each low quality toy, us collectors started to lose more and more of our passion.

However, that ends now! Rejoice fellow toy collectors for I have the thing that will reignite your lost passion. Behold, the dream of all Power Rangers fans and collectors: Don Onitaijin!

What you are looking at is the main megazord of Avataro Sentai Donbrothers, one of the latest Sentais to come out of Japan. In case you don’t know, Power Rangers is actually an adaption of the Super Sentai series with most of the toys being American adaptations. So what makes this different then the disappointing American toys? Simple: they actually listened to criticism.

The son of Takuya Tsurumaki, one of the designers of the franchise, got a chance to play with the previous season’s toys and said that they were “boring”. He didn’t like the blocky nature of the toys and wished he was able to pose them more. So they decided to take his comments into account when making Don Onitaijin, resulting in something never previously seen in their toys. One thing that you might notice is how much mobility there is in the joints. Unlike most megazords, Don Onitaijin moves a lot like a gunpla which allows for more dynamic movement. Because of this you can make interesting poses that you wouldn’t see in typical toys like it (it can sit!). And the craziest thing of all is that it sits at an incredible 17 in tall! If you are an avid Power Rangers fan looking for a high quality megazord or just a toy collector in general, then I highly recommend looking to get this one. This is one toy that you can’t miss.

The Evolving Falcons

The Evolving Falcons

March 26, 2024

Yu-Gi-Oh is a constantly evolving game. If you were to show a player from back when it first came out its current form, then they would probably consider it a completely different game. Today, we are going to be focusing on one of Yu-Gi-Oh's more important changes and an archetype that spawned from it: Xyz summoning. For those who don’t keep up with the game, Xyz summoning is a way to bring out powerful monsters by stacking monsters with the same level onto each other. The archetype we’re talking about however takes it a step further.

Raidraptors is an archetype introduced back in 2017 that focuses on Xyz summoning. This archetype is unique though in that it is the only one that centers around a gimmick unique to Xyz monsters: Rank-Up. Raidraptors hold the record for the most in-archetype Rank-Up spells and Xyz monsters, making them one of the first archetypes people think of when talking about Xyz summoning. However, they suffered a bit of a problem.

While they had a great end game in the form of their boss monster ‘Ultimate Falcon’, they had issues with starting the process to get there. For one thing, if their normal summon was somehow stopped then you would often be dead in the water. You then combine this with the fact that they were vulnerable to interruptions and locked you out of certain generic staples. All of these factors made it so that while they had a great end game, it didn’t matter since they couldn’t make it there. And while they’ve continued to get support over the years, it wasn’t until October of last year that they received powerful dedicated support.

‘Raidraptor – Bloom Vulture’ addresses the normal summoning issue by allowing you to summon both it and another Raidraptor from your hand, giving you easy access to a rank 4. The new continuous spell ‘Raidraptor – Roost’ enhances consistency by searching out your Raidraptor spell & trap cards. In addition to it, ‘Raidraptor – Brave Strix’ is another spell & trap searcher as well as a way to search out the all important Rank-Up spells that Raidraptor relied on. All of this leads us to their newest and most powerful boss monster:

‘Raidraptor – Rising Rebellion Falcon’. This beast is one of the only two Rank 13 monsters to exist in the game officially. This card nukes your opponent’s board upon being summoned and is immune to other card effects, making it so most ways to get rid of it are useless. Combined with the ability to copy the effects of its fallen comrades, Rising Rebellion is the perfect representation of Raidrators as a whole. How do you bring it out? Why, with their new Rank-Up spell of course. ‘Rise-Rank-Up-Magic Raidraptor’s Force’ is unique in that it can use multiple Xyz monsters in order to bring out stronger ones easier. To put it simply, it’s Synchro summoning with Xyz monsters. And with it being a quick-play, you can tactically decide for yourself when is the best time to nuke your opponent.

And now you know a bit more about Raidraptors’ new power. Now go my fellow rebels and take down your oppressors! Show them the power of rebellion!

Beyond Dragon Ball - Exploring Akira Toriyama's Legacy

POP-COOLEDTURED SPECIALIST

Beyond Dragon Ball - Exploring Akira Toriyama's Legacy

March 18, 2024

Akira Toriyama was a widely famous and talented creator known for his dynamic artwork, inventive storytelling, and iconic character designs within anime. His contributions have left a lasting mark on the industry, shaping the landscape for generations of artists and fans alike.

Dragon Ball, created by Toriyama, is a well recognizable and adored manga and anime series. It follows Goku and the others as they travel through numerous worlds, fighting great challengers and collecting their Dragon Balls. Dragon Ball Z’s combination of action, humor, and unique characters has captured fans worldwide, leaving an enduring influence on popular culture, no matter your age.

While Dragon Ball remains Toriyama’s most well-known work, his contributions extend beyond just this legendary series. Exploring his lesser-known works, such as Dr. Slump, provides an insight into Toriyama’s diverse talents and his broader contributions to design and art overall.

On April 5, 1955, Akira Toriyama was born in Nagoya, Japan’s Aichi Prefecture. He developed a strong interest in manga and drawing from an early age and studied advertising and design at a technical school after high school, topics that would later inspire his artistic approach.

When Toriyama started sending manga to several magazines in the early 1970s, his professional career truly began. His breakthrough was the Shueisha Tezuka Award he received in 1978 for his one-shot manga, “Wonder Island.” This resulted in his first series, “Dr. Slump,” which started appearing in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1980 and became very well-known very fast. His captivating narratives and endearing character designs have set standards for upcoming artists. Dragon Ball transformed the shonen genre by making themes like character development, power increases, and fierce battles more widely accepted.

Dr. Slump

Akira Toriyama produced the absurd sci-fi comic “Dr. Slump,” which follows Dr. Senbei Norimaki, a quirky inventor, and his robot creation, Arale, through an imaginary Penguin Village. The themes of “Dr. Slump” center on friendship and the absurdities of ordinary life. The characters are colorful and unusual, ranging from the super-strong Arale to the strange Penguin Village residents. The manga’s settings and charming characters address themes of acceptance and the quest for happiness, making it one to be enjoyed by all.

“Dr. Slump” laid the groundwork for many elements that would also later appear in Toriyama’s Dragon Ball. It introduced his blend of humor and action, as well as his knack for creating memorable characters. Additionally, certain characters from “Dr. Slump,” such as Arale, have made cameo appearances in Dragon Ball, furthering the connection between the series.

Jaco the Galactic Patrolman

Jaco the Galactic Patrolman” was a manga series written and illustrated by Toriyama. It was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2013 and serves as a prequel to Dragon Ball, both located in the same universe. The story follows Jaco, an alien member of the Galactic Patrol, as he arrives on Earth to avoid a tragedy. Although “Jaco” is an independent series, it has many connections with the Dragon Ball universe. Particularly, the character of Jaco appears in Dragon Ball Super and interacts with characters from the main series. Additionally, the events of “Jaco” serve as the foundation for certain plot points in Dragon Ball, offering backstory and context for fans of the franchise. While not as well-known as Toriyama’s other works, it is nonetheless a popular addition to his bibliography, providing fans with extra insight into the DBZ universe’s lore.

Sand Land

Akira Toriyama produced “Sand Land” as a one-shot manga, published in 2000. Set in a post-apocalyptic future where water is scarce, the story follows Sheriff Rao and his young sidekick, Beelzebub, as they set out to find a new supply of water and preserve their drought-stricken location.

Themes of environmentalism and cooperation are heavy in “Sand Land.” Toriyama investigates the consequences of environmental degradation and the significance of conserving natural resources. The manga additionally explores themes of redemption as the protagonists face ethical dilemmas and personal struggles along the way. Toriyama’s “Sand Land” is similar to his earlier works because of its emphasis on adventure and companionship, but it stands out for its distinct setting and tone. Unlike the cheerful humor of Dragon Ball or Dr. Slump, “Sand Land” has a more serious and philosophical tone, demonstrating Toriyama’s versatility as a writer.

Video Games

Toriyama has worked frequently with game developers, bringing his creative talents to a wide range of projects. His work on the Dragon Quest series is especially valuable, providing character designs and artwork for multiple episodes. His impact on game design and storytelling is noteworthy, with his bright character designs and creative world-building influencing the visual identity of many games. Toriyama’s involvement frequently increases the appeal of games, drawing fans with his distinct art style and intriguing storytelling.

Notable video game endeavors include the Dragon Quest series, where Toriyama’s character designs have become associated with the franchise. He has also contributed to titles like Chrono Trigger, Blue Dragon, and Tobal №1, creating a lasting impression on the gaming industry.

Exploring beyond Dragon Ball is essential to fully appreciate Toriyama’s contributions to manga and anime. His lesser-known works offer insights into his range as an artist and enrich our understanding of his profound influence on the medium.

His innovative storytelling and iconic character designs continue to influence aspiring manga artists, shaping the next generation of creators.

The legacy of Dragon Ball and his lesser-known works persists, continuing to captivate audiences and leaving an enduring impact on the entertainment industry. His work remains relevant and continues to be adapted into various forms, including anime, video games, and merchandise, showcasing its enduring appeal.

Even though Akira Toriyama has recently passed, his creative genius and iconic contributions to manga and anime will continue to resonate deeply with those who grew up with his works. His legacy will be fondly remembered by his fans, evoking cherished memories of childhood and inspiring future generations of storytellers.

Breaking Down Margot Robbie's Iconic Roles

March 14, 2024

In the world of Hollywood, certain stars shine brighter than others, and Margot Robbie is undoubtedly one of them at the moment. With her outstanding acting abilities and captivating presence, Robbie has graced our screens with memorable performances time and again. From her breakout role in “The Wolf of Wall Street” to her recently popular portrayal of Barbie, She has continuously proven her power as an actress. As the hype around her continues to grow, it’s only fitting to take a nostalgic trip through her filmography and rank some of her most outstanding and memorable works.

1. “I, Tonya”

(2017)

In this biographical comedy and drama, Robbie delivers an emotional performance as the infamous figure skater, Tonya Harding. Her portrayal is very raw, earning her widespread acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, as well as thousands of fans watching for that perfect close-up of the actor’s passionate performance. Robbie’s ability to capture Harding’s complexities makes “I, Tonya” an amazing cinematic experience worth every second. Filled with drama and excitement, there is never a dull moment in the movie.

2. “The Wolf of Wall Street”

(2013)

Scorsese’s tale of excess and greed wouldn’t be complete without Robbie’s portrayal of Naomi Lapaglia, the feisty wife of Jordan Belfort, a former stockbroker and financial criminal. Despite being relatively new to Hollywood at the time, Robbie commanded the screen alongside Leonardo DiCaprio with effortless charm and undeniable charisma. With this success, Robbie became loved by men and women everywhere, showing us that even when crime is involved, you can still look stunning in pink.

3. “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”

(2019)

In Tarantino’s artistic love letter to 1960s Hollywood, Robbie embodies the essence of Sharon Tate, capturing her innocence and warmth with grace. Her appeal is evident, even though there are too few lines for her to deliver on. While her role may be more understated and smaller in this compared to others on this list, Robbie’s presence adds depth and authenticity to the film’s nostalgic atmosphere, something that would have been missing tremendously without her.

4. “Suicide Squad” (2016)

As Harley Quinn, an unpredictable anti-heroine, Robbie added a much-needed jolt of energy into the DC Extended Universe, with her violent yet eccentric charm. With such a star-studded cast, some would have questioned Robbie’s ability to make herself stand out. But when the reviews came, it was apparent that she had a playful yet very memorable performance. While the film itself received some mixed reviews, Robbie’s portrayal of the character was pretty universally praised, solidifying her status as a fan favorite.

5. “Bombshell” (2019)

Robbie takes on the role of Kayla Pospisil, a fictionalized character representing the experiences of other women at Fox News during the Roger Ailes sexual harassment scandal. Throughout the movie, she transitions from a young and naive character when she first enters the newsroom to a more moral-based character in the aftermath. Despite sharing the screen with other powerful actresses like Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman, Robbie holds her own and delivers a standout performance that is both emotional and powerful.

6. “Birds of Prey” (2020)

In this female-led spin-off of “Suicide Squad,” Robbie redoes her role as Harley Quinn, this time taking center stage in a comedy adventure filled with action and female empowerment. While the film may have flown under the radar for some who enjoy this universe, Robbie’s magnetic performance remains a highlight in the movie, showcasing her ability to showcase even the most outlandish characters with depth. Robbie’s eccentric adventure abandons the typical dark tones of the superhero universe in favor of fun and energy, resulting in unapologetic excitement. It is almost as if Gotham had made a music video.

As we reflect on Margot Robbie’s career, it becomes clear that her talent has no bounds at the moment. Whether portraying real-life people such as Tonya Harding or larger-than-life characters such as Barbie, Robbie consistently captivates audiences with her skills and dedication to her craft. With each new role, she pushes the boundaries of what it means to be a leading lady in Hollywood, leaving an indelible mark on cinema in the process, for men and women alike. As we anticipate and wait for her future projects, one thing is certain. Margot Robbie’s stardom will continue to rise, illuminating the silver screen for years to come.

Imposters Among Us: The Lights Dim for an Animated Adventure!

Imposters Among Us: The Lights Dim for an Animated Adventure!

February 11, 2024

Hold onto your emergency oxygen tanks, crewmates, because the imposters are infiltrating a new platform: animation! Innersloth, the cunning minds behind the social deduction phenomenon Among Us, has finally given fans a peek into their highly anticipated animated series, sending shivers of excitement (and perhaps a touch of suspicion) down spines worldwide.

The image, unveiled with the cryptic caption "work on the show is progressing nicely!!!," depicts a familiar scene: the spaceship cafeteria. But this time, the iconic crewmates and imposters aren't pixelated sprites – they're vibrant, expressive characters, their forms hinting at the humor and action-packed chaos to come. A blood-splattered banner declares, "Patient Crewmates are rewarded with a pizza party (totally safe) (not a trap)," leaving a delicious question mark hanging in the air. Is this a playful jab at the game's inherent distrust, or a sly foreshadowing of something more sinister?

Innersloth has been tight-lipped about the plot, but whispers from the internet void suggest the series will delve deeper into the lore of the Among Us universe. Will we finally discover the origin story of the imposters, their motivations, and perhaps even their… gooey anatomy? Could the crewmates have secrets of their own lurking beneath those colorful spacesuits? Or will the focus be on the hilarious chaos that erupts when trust is shattered and accusations fly?

One thing's for sure: the potential for an Among Us animated series is as vast as the cosmos itself. Imagine the dramatic tension as imposters lurk in the shadows, the side-splitting comedy of botched sabotage attempts, and the heartwarming moments of unlikely friendships forged amidst suspicion. The animation style, as hinted by the image, can lend itself to both slapstick antics and nail-biting suspense, keeping viewers guessing until the very end.

But amidst the excitement, a shadow of doubt lingers. Release dates are still under wraps, and Innersloth's history of playful trolling leaves fans wondering if this is all just an elaborate trap. Are they the crewmates, cautiously optimistic but prepared for betrayal? Or are they the imposters, savoring the anticipation before striking?

Only time will tell what awaits us in the animated world of Among Us. But one thing is certain: the suspense is as delicious as an emergency ration, and we're all strapped in for the ride. So keep your visor clear, crewmates, and remember: trust no one, not even yourself. After all, in this game of life (and animation), everyone's a suspect.

Dev Patel's "Monkey Man" Swings into Theaters

February 10, 2024

Imagine the electrifying energy of Mumbai's underground fight clubs, where anonymity hides simmering rage and desperation. Now, picture Dev Patel, not just as a participant, but as the masked avenger known only as "Monkey Man," directing his own path to justice. Yes, you read that right. Patel is pulling double duty, starring in and directing this action-packed revenge tale, with none other than Jordan Peele swinging in as his producer via Monkeypaw Productions.

But wait, there's more! Forget the quiet whispers of a streaming release. This "Monkey Man" is baring its fangs and leaping straight onto the silver screen, thanks to a partnership with Universal Pictures. Talk about a plot twist worthy of Peele himself!

So, what can we expect from this genre-bending cinematic leap of faith? Patel's "Kid" is far from your typical hero. He's a product of the city's underbelly, fueled by a past shrouded in mystery and a present defined by bloody knuckles and a simian mask. He's John Wick with a soulful gaze and a touch of Hanuman, the mythical monkey god, guiding his every move.

Whispers suggest the film is a potent cocktail of action, social commentary, and even a dash of superhero origin story. Think "The Raid" meets "Slumdog Millionaire" with a sprinkle of "Black Panther," all filtered through Patel's unique directorial lens. Can you feel the anticipation building?

But here's the real kicker: Peele's involvement throws a whole new monkey wrench into the mix. Will his signature brand of social horror seep into the Mumbai mayhem? Can we expect genre-bending surprises that blur the lines between reality and vigilante justice? The possibilities are as thrilling as a perfectly executed parkour move – and just as unpredictable.

Mark your calendars, cinephiles, because "Monkey Man" is swinging into theaters on April 5th. Get ready for a story that punches, ponders, and, with Peele onboard, might just leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about heroes, villains, and the masks we all wear. Remember, in the concrete jungle of Mumbai, sometimes the most unexpected figures rise to become the legends they were always meant to be. Will "Monkey Man" be yours?

Ungentlemanly Warfare: Where Mayhem Meets Medals

POP-COOLEDTURED SPECIALIST

Ungentlemanly Warfare: Where Mayhem Meets Medals

February 9, 2024

Forget your neatly pressed heroes and chivalrous battles. This ain't your grandpappy's war story. Brace yourselves for a glimpse into the shadows, where a band of misfits, rejects, and downright scoundrels are about to rewrite the rules of engagement – with explosions, wisecracks, and enough grit to choke a panzer.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, the trailer declares, and it doesn't lie. We see flashes of faces – a scarred smirk here, a glint of steely defiance there. A motley crew indeed, thrown together like mismatched socks, but with a glint in their eyes that speaks of cunning and chaos in equal measure.

Their leader? Captain Alistair Thorne (picture Henry Cavill with a twinkle of mischief replacing his usual Superman stoicism). He's got the battlefield scars and the haunted gaze of a man who's seen the abyss, but his grin promises he's ready to kick it right back in the teeth.

Their mission? Impossible, of course. Deep behind enemy lines, amidst the goosebumps-inducing rumble of Nazi war machines, they'll be tasked with a heist that could turn the tide of the war. But these ain't your average jewel thieves. Their tools of choice? Explosives that sing opera, gadgets that would make Q blush, and fighting moves so unorthodox they'd make Dirty Harry wince.

The trailer is a whirlwind of action – bullets ballet across the screen, fists meet flesh with bone-crunching satisfaction, and explosions erupt in showers of fire and fury. But amidst the mayhem, there's humor. A wisecrack cracked as a grenade sails through the air, a shared smirk before charging into a hail of gunfire. These are men (and maybe a woman or two) who dance with danger, and they know how to laugh in the face of it.

This isn't just a war movie; it's a heist flick, a buddy comedy, and a middle finger salute to convention all rolled into one. It's the story of underdogs rising above, of proving that sometimes, the most unconventional methods are the most effective. It's about the camaraderie forged in the fires of battle, the bonds that form when you're staring down the barrel of a Nazi tank with nothing but your wits and a questionable sense of humor.

So, buckle up, history buffs and thrill-seekers alike. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is coming, and it's bringing a whole new brand of warfare – one where explosions have punchlines and victory comes with a wink and a scar. Are you ready for a mission where the only rule is: win at all costs (and preferably with a bit of panache)? Then prepare to be entertained, surprised, and maybe even a little bit shocked. Just remember, when it comes to the Ministry, keep your expectations low and your laughter loud. It's going to be one hell of a ride..

Griffin Family to Keep Clowning Around "For as Long as the Jokes Keep Flowing"

February 8, 2024

Quahog, Rhode Island – Chicken fights at dawn? Check. Baby geniuses scheming world domination? Check. Talking dog delivering existential pronouncements? Absolutely check. The iconic Griffin family has been entertaining (and occasionally horrifying) audiences for a staggering 25 years, and creator Seth MacFarlane has some news that will make you scream louder than Stewie on a sugar rush: Family Guy ain't going anywhere. That's right, folks. Despite rumors of cancellation, whispers and creative fatigue, MacFarlane, in an interview with TheWrap, declared that the show is "still surviving and thriving." He chuckled, a hint of Peter Griffin's mischievous grin in his voice, "There's no indication that the show is going to end anytime soon."

Now, before you start picturing Peter mooning retirement homes in the year 2050, MacFarlane clarified. "The goal of the show is just to make people laugh," he said, "and as long as we can do that, we'll keep going." He compared the show to a well-oiled (and slightly rusty) amusement park ride, offering thrills, chills, and the occasional bout of nausea (courtesy of Brian's philosophical ramblings).

But is there a secret sauce to Family Guy's longevity? MacFarlane offered a cryptic wink. "It's all about pushing boundaries," he said, a mischievous glint in his eye. "We like to keep things unpredictable, even if it means ruffling a few feathers…or beaks…or chicken costumes."

So, what can we expect from the Griffins in the years to come? More musical numbers with Meg that will make you cringe harder than Peter after a chili cook-off? More time-traveling shenanigans with Stewie that rewrite history in increasingly nonsensical ways? The answer, according to MacFarlane, is a resounding "you bet your bippy!"

Whether you love it or hate it (or, more likely, love to hate it), Family Guy is a pop culture phenomenon that refuses to fade away. So get ready for more outrageous humor, nonsensical cutaway gags, and Peter's signature brand of clueless charm. After all, in the wise words of Brian Griffin (when he's not busy contemplating the meaning of existence), "If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Unless it's Peter's car. Then definitely fix it."

So, buckle up, Quahog! The Griffin family is far from finished entertaining us, even if their jokes sometimes make us groan louder than Peter after a particularly large plate of meatballs. Just remember, as Peter himself would say, "Giggity giggity...and away we go!"
